Understanding QuestionMark assessment properties

QuestionMark (QM) Perception Authoring Manager allows assessment properties to be set in two ways:

  1. directly by authors within Authoring Manager
  2. indirectly using template files.

It should be noted that while a small set of settings can be changed directly within Authoring Manager, a much wider range of settings can be changed indirectly within template files. This document provides a summary of properties and settings that can be easily changed by authors within Authoring Manager and a reference to how commonly requested configuration changes can be made to assessments via template files.

Assessment properties which can be set directly by authors

The following assessment properties can be set directly in Authoring Manager

Secure delivery

Secure delivery required for all high stakes exams and is recommended for practice tests to ensure students know what to expect on the day of their exam.

  1. Open Authoring Manager and navigate to your assessment
  2. Right click on the assessment and select ‘Edit Assessment’
  3. Under ‘Assessment Settings’ ensure that ‘Test’ or ‘Exam’ are selected for Assessment Type
  4. Under ‘Security Settings’ select ‘Require Questionmark Secure’
  5. Also ensure that ‘Allow open access to assignment’ is unticked

Time limit

Animation demonstrating how to set a time limit

The time limit is the forced timer that appears inside QuestionMark Perception ensuring all students have equal time, even if the exam is started slightly later for some students.

Note: For students with extra time you will have to create a duplicate assessment and assign different time limits to the two assessments.

  1. Open Authoring Manager and navigate to your assessment
  2. Right click on the assessment and select ‘Edit Assessment’
  3. Tick the box next to ‘Time limit’
  4. Type the number of minutes into the ‘minutes’ box

Open access

Open access allows users to type their own name (rather than being forced to use their University username) and does not require a password. This is for use with Surveys rather than assessments.

  1. Open Authoring Manager and navigate to your assessment
  2. Right click on the assessment and select ‘Edit Assessment’
  3. Under ‘Security Settings’ select ‘Allow open access to assessment’
  4. Also ensure that ‘Require Questionmark Secure’ is unticked

Assessment properties which must be set via templates

Settings based on the layout or visuals of an assessment or survey are done via templates. The templates available for your assessment are shown below.

These templates can be set in Authoring Mananger

  1. Open Authoring Manager and navigate to your assessment
  2. Right click on the assessment and select ‘Edit Assessment’
  3. From the ‘Template file for assessment’ section select your prefered template
