Panopto Board Capture

If you record whiteboards and blackboards regularly you may find it easier to use the Panopto Board capture application than the “Panopto with Camera Control” page.

This application is in development and released in beta
You can download this application on any computer, but it only works in lecture theatres with a camera

The Panopto Board Capture application shows the board as seen through the Panopto camera and moves left and right by clicking on either the left or right-hand side of the screen.

It was created to solve the following problems

  • It’s hard to visualise how position names relate to areas in the physical room
  • You have to switch between multiple applications to see if the camera has moved
  • It can sometimes be difficult to see the boards from the back of the room
  • Adding a camera as a secondary source in Panopto is confusing for new users

While in beta the application is not pre-installed in lecture theatres.

Installing

  1. Download the Panopto Board Application zip file (from within the University network or while connected to VPN)
  2. Once downloaded extract the file to your My Documents folder (this is the default location)

You can now use the application launching PanoptoBoardCapture.exe in a lecture theatre

Using the application

  1. Double click on PanoptoBoardCapture.exe from the location you extracted the zip file into
  2. The camera in the room will point at the default board
  3. After a few seconds, the image should appear
  • Click on the left-hand side of the screen to move the camera to the board on the left
  • Click on the right-hand side of the display to move the camera to the board on the right
  • Click on “Show Position”, choose a position and click “Move” to move the camera to any position known by the camera

Recording with Panopto (Simple)

The following process is designed to be simple enough for most users who are new to Panopto

  1. Open Panopto, check your microphone, select a Blackboard course
  2. Ensure that Panopto is recording your screen
  3. Press Record

Panopto will record your screen, which is showing the camera images.

Recording with Panopto (Advanced)

If one picture every five seconds is not sufficient for your class, then you can capture the camera with a higher framerate

  1. Open Panopto, check your microphone, select a Blackboard course
  2. Under “Video” select None (in the primary sources area)
  3. Click the “Add Another Video Source” button and choose the Dome Camera
  4. Change the resolution to “1920×1080” and set the “kbps” to 750 – 1000
  5. Press Record

Panopto will record the camera in the highest resolution possible; you can then use the Panopto Board Capture application to control the camera and enlarge the board for your students
